Ness hails from the land of hippies, stoners, and social justice warriors–Corvallis, Oregon. They grew up in a home with a loving single mother who, as the fierce psychologist she is, instilled a humanistic view of the world. Leading with empathy and curiosity became the central tenets of Ness’s philosophy. This acceptance allowed Ness to flourish as the self confident, loud band kid they became, wearing a sousaphone and shako with unshakeable pride. Unicorn fanny pack and Madonna tee shirt in tow, they found a love for the oddballs of the world. Which of course, results in a theatre kid. The fated phone call from Carnegie Mellon included an anecdote they will never forget: “You got in because you wear your mess on your sleeve. That unbridled awkward joy is what makes you special.” Aside from their deathly peanut allergy, nothing can stop them from cracking a joke.
