Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

As an institution, the School of Drama is committed to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion for people of all identities. We condemn all forms of racism, bias, and racial injustice.

The School of Drama leads the way in the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the College of Fine Arts. As a response to the social injustices that continuously occur, the School of Drama’s DEI committee created actionable steps towards creating a more inclusive culture for students, faculty and staff. Their model, adopted in 2021 has been utilized institutionally as an example of actionable and intentional DEI work in Higher Education.

Robert Ramirez was appointed as the Head of the School in 2022 and continued the work of developing inclusive spaces in the School. His support and advocacy for equitable practices has made the School of Drama the most diverse of all five schools within CFA. He and his leadership team work collaboratively with the Office of DEI for CFA to ensure that best practices are implemented and continue to develop innovative ways of addressing the cultural needs of the Drama Community.

Anti-Racist & Equitable Practices in Theater

In fall 2020, School of Drama faculty, staff, and students participated in an Anti-Racism and Racial Justice course with core curriculum designed by Nicole Brewer. The goal was that this course would evolve to become both a curricular requirement and ongoing training for all incoming students, faculty, and guests.

In 2022, Kaja Dunn (pictured) was hired as the first full-time, tenure-track faculty for Anti-Racism and Culturally Competent Practice. It is a required course for all first-year students in the School of Drama.
