Kevin Hines

Associate Teaching Professor, PTM


Kevin Hines has been teaching Technical Direction at Carnegie Mellon since 1998. His area of specialty is Technical Design, including the engineering, detailing and construction of theatrical scenery, scenic effects and stage machinery.


Kevin is a graduate of Binghamton University and the Yale School of Drama. Before coming to CMU, he was a Project Manager at Chicago Scenic Studios and the Technical Director of the Goodman Theatre. At CMU, he teaches courses in Basic Production Technology, Technical Design, Structural Design and Stage Machine Design. His is advisor and mentor to TD students in production positions, and to other CMU affiliates involved in project work that would benefit from his expertise.

Concurrent with his teaching, Kevin maintains a freelance career as a Technical Designer/Detailer in the commercial market. Some of his recent work includes technical elements of: Blackbird (Broadway,) Kinky Boots (Broadway, National Tour, and Cruise Line,) Hairspray (National Tour and Las Vegas,) Hello, Dolly! (National Tour,) Mean Girls (National Tour,) Flying Over Sunset (Broadway,) King Lear (Broadway,) and Music Man (Broadway.)

He is an avid Origamist, and can fold Kawasaki’s Rose in under four minutes.
