After the disastrous debut of his first symphony, Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff falls into a turbulent artistic dry spell.
Preludes, a musical fantasia by contemporary virtuoso Dave Malloy, follows Rachmaninoff’s attempt to overcome his mental blockade through hypnosis, which deconstructs his fantasies and unlocks his creativity. By fusing Rachmaninoff’s original works with his own genre-defying compositions, Malloy (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) crafts an irreplicable soundscape reminiscent of a turbulent brain. Preludes confronts a familiar artistic dilemma: What do you do when you can’t create?
